Schedule III classification checklist

A practical checklist for converting trial balance and ledger data into reviewable Schedule III classification, notes, comparatives, and report-ready outputs.

Prepare source data

  • Export trial balance, ledger masters, group masters, prior-year balances, schedules, and management grouping from Tally or ERP.
  • Check duplicate ledgers, suspense balances, unusual openings, inactive ledgers, and year-end adjustment accounts.
  • Lock a copy of the original source export before classification changes are made.

Map ledgers

  • Map each ledger to a Schedule III head, sub-head, note, and working paper reference.
  • Separate balance sheet, statement of profit and loss, disclosure-only, reclassification, and not-applicable accounts.
  • Flag unmapped, ambiguous, related-party, tax, loan, deposit, advance, and related disclosure-sensitive accounts for review.

Review classification judgments

  • Review current and non-current classification, trade and non-trade balances, secured and unsecured loans, related-party balances, statutory dues, and ageing categories.
  • Document overrides with reason, reviewer, date, evidence reference, and impact on the financial statement line item.
  • Compare classification with prior-year treatment and record reasons for changes.

Connect notes and schedules

  • Tie each financial statement line item to supporting schedules, disclosure notes, and working paper references.
  • Review fixed assets, borrowings, trade receivables, trade payables, revenue, expenses, taxes, and contingent items for note completeness.
  • Keep reviewer comments and client explanations attached to the relevant classification area.

Finalize report readiness

  • Check opening balances, current-year balances, comparatives, rounding, subtotals, note numbering, and cross-references.
  • Resolve unmapped ledgers, pending reclassifications, and disclosure gaps before partner review.
  • Archive final mapping, overrides, review comments, and report output references in the audit file.

Frequently asked questions

Does this checklist replace Schedule III professional judgment?

No. It helps structure classification, mapping, review, and documentation. The auditor still reviews judgments, disclosures, presentation, and final financial statements.

Can it be used with Tally trial balance data?

Yes. The checklist is designed around trial balance, ledger masters, grouping, prior-year balances, and supporting schedules that many Indian CA firms receive from Tally or ERP systems.

What should I bring for a Schedule III demo?

Bring one trial balance, ledger grouping file, or current Schedule III workbook so the demo can focus on mapping, review overrides, notes, and report readiness.
